BECAUSE WE WERE SCARED. Ben Franklins quote of not giving liberty up for temporary safety exactly applied here. We are the American people have failed our country and our Founding Fathers by allowing this trashing of our constitution. We broke away from England partially because they were housing themselves (invading privacy) in our house.
I will a partial part of the bill of rights and show how The Patriot Act tramples it.

Freedom from unreasonable searches:
The government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigation.
Right to a speedy and public trial: The government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial.
Freedom of association: To assist terror investigation, the government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity.
Right to legal representation: The government may monitor conversations between attorneys and clients in federal prisons and deny lawyers to Americans accused of crimes.
Freedom of speech: The government may prosecute librarians or keepers of any other records if they tell anyone the government subpoenaed information related to a terror investigation.
Right to liberty: Americans may be jailed without being charged or being able to confront witnesses against them. US citizens (labeled "unlawful combatants") have been held incommunicado and refused attorneys.

The Federal government also includes domestic terrorist which by all things I've read could be me! Some places they have possible signs of terrorist is someone who stores food, strong religious belief, owns guns, etc..
Scary stuff! Why live in America if we aren't going to be free! I'd rather deal with being attacked and the terrible consequences that could pour out of that than be held hostage by my own government,
The thinking that just because the Federal Government can't break the Bill of Rights that they can't use intelligence obtained in a different manner that they can't protect us is silly. How did they get intelligence prior to 9-11? They actually already had the intel to stop 9-11 they just didn't follow the leads. It is an excuse for the Federal Government to have power. MAN UP PEOPLE and accept that the world is dangerous. If you want a government that takes control of your life and in your life you have no privacy MOVE TO CUBA, SOVIET UNION (oh yeah they failed) etc.
I believe any candidate that is for the Patriot Act shows the mindset and the mindset is wrong. YOU DON'T TRAMBLE THE RIGHTS OF THE CITIZENS! If they can't get that right forget it. They aren't for freedom. They do not deserve to be voted for president of the United States.
America was formed to be free from government intrusion not to be free from risk.
